Sometimes Slip Resistance is not easily defined. Technically, true slip resistant shoes have a defined rating such as a SATRA rating per the ASTM F standards. According to the ASTM website, F quite simply allows for testing of the whole shoe against a myriad of flooring surface under both dry and contaminated conditions, says Bill Ells, vice president, component sales, Vibram USA, and vice chairman of F13. In general, softer rubber soles with fine traction cuts produce the most slip resistant shoes on wet and dry surfaces such as tile, polished concrete and floors that are common in indoor industrial and commercial settings. But a slip resistant shoe that performs well on tile in a hospital may not hold up on a rough concrete factory floor, roofing or highway construction project. There are many factors to consider when selecting the right footwear for a given work environment. For instance, ot all rubber boots are slip-resistant on tile floors. Soft rubber, slip resistant soles on rubber boots such as the Viking VW22 and VW29 are ideal for use in food processing, chemical plants, breweries and work environments that are wet and slippery. A heavy lug sole such as on a Muck Chore Boot is better for farm conditions but not good on tile floors.
