As you&#;re probably aware, your baby&#;s skin is incredibly sensitive to the sun. That&#;s why, in addition to applying baby-safe sunscreen, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends putting your baby in sun-protective clothing and hats &#; especially if they&#;re 6 months and younger. When shopping for swimsuits, look for options that cover a lot of your baby&#;s skin, such as rash guards with long sleeves and even long pants.

Although sun protection is the top priority, you also want to look for a swimsuits that easy to put on your child, easy to clean, and just plain cute! Fortunately, there are lots of great baby swimwear options to choose from to make sure your child is both comfortable and protected from the sun.

How we chose the best baby swimsuits

Because a baby's skin is particularly sensitive to the sun, it&#;s extremely important that your baby&#;s swimsuit helps protect your child&#;s skin from UV rays. But how do you know if a swimsuit is simply covering baby&#;s skin or actually providing protection? To find out, we spoke to Robin Schaffran, M.D., a dermatologist with Cedars-Sinai Medical Centerin Los Angeles, California who practices both pediatric and adult dermatology, and referred to guidelines from the AAP and the Skin Cancer Foundation. Per this guidance, all of the swimsuits we selected have a UPF rating of 50 or higher, which blocks up to 98 percent of UV rays

But even after eliminating baby swimsuits with a low UPF rating, we were still left with hundreds of options. To further narrow down the choices, we spoke to five moms on the What to Expect editorial team who have seven children between them and have tested many of the bathing suits on this list. We asked what they consider when shopping for a baby swimsuit (besides an adorable print that will look cute in all those beach baby photos). Based on these conversations, as well as feedback from What to Expect community members, we learned parents want their baby in swimsuits that are:

  • Made of a stretchy fabric so it&#;s easier to put on and take off
  • Made of a tightly woven sheen fabric, like polyester, to better reflect radiation
  • Able to withstand a washing machine

With this information, we narrowed down the hundreds of baby swimsuits to the 10 best bathing suits for babies and toddlers.

All children from 0-18 months need a reusable or disposable swim nappy

Swim nappies are an essential piece of swimwear and any child who isn&#;t potty-trained will need to wear one in a swimming pool. They are enforced as part of the double-layer nappy system requirement by most organised baby swimming lessons.

There are two types of swim nappies available:

  • Disposable swim nappies

    • Worn once and thrown away

    • Look like regular nappies but don&#;t swell up in water

    • Are not very effective at preventing faeces from entering the pool

  • Reusable swim nappies

    • Can be washed and worn multiple times

    • Look like a pair of swimming shorts or are integrated into swimwear such as Happy Nappy Costumes or Happy Nappy Wetsuit

    • The Happy Nappy provides excellent protection from faecal leaks and is mandatory in 99% of swim schools.

    • Reusable swim nappies have many advantages over disposable swim nappies. You can read more about the benefits of reusable swim nappies here

The Happy Nappy from Splash About is a reusable swim nappy with thick, soft cuffs that create a seal around your baby&#;s thighs and tummy to prevent any faeces from escaping. The unique design features a gusset to allow for a full range of movement, without the risk of leaks.

The Happy Nappy Duo offers the same reliable leak protection as the Happy Nappy, with the added benefit of a silver lined layer that acts as a 2nd nappy, insisted upon by swim schools. This silver lining  kills germs before they leave the nappy, protecting your baby and other swimmers from pathogens leaking into the pool. Both the Happy Nappy and the Happy Nappy Duo are accepted and endorsed by UK Swim Schools.

You can view the Happy Nappy range here.
