Veteran amusement machine operator Brad Brown describes his COVID-19 recovery plan, including his approach for boxing machines, crane machines, photo booths and digital jukeboxes.

As I travel the country in search of ideas to survive COVID-19, I have already formulated a plan for how I plan to reposition my amusement machine company.

In this post I'll address some of the coin op amusement machine categories I have been operating. I will present three things that I like about them, and three things I don't like about them. And then I will share what my future is going to be with each of these types of machines moving to the eventual post-COVID-19 business world.

These categories are not listed in any order of importance.

What I like:

1. A very, very reliable machine by this manufacturer. Like the Maytag Repairman, I have very few service calls.
2. One of the few machines that are in the field and operating, Kalkomat Boxing machines seem to be making reasonable consistent money during the COVD-19 shutdown.
3. When I place them in a location, they tend to last for a very long time.

What I don't like:

1. Boxing machines are not as easy to place as I'd like because of the stigma attached to "hitting and punching" in a bar environment.
2. It's a heavy, tall machine, and that makes it awkward to physically move it into a location, with the exception of the Fire Boxer model.
3. I need a truck to move it.

This category of machine continues to be a bread and butter item for street accounts, and I will continue to operate these and expand as best I can. In the best locations, going forward I will invest in the new Boxing Prize 2 machine, which is more expensive but it has the merchandising element for added income.

What I like:

1. They offer a simple formula that everyone knows and understands.

What I don't like:

1. Operating big plush cranes requires stocking inventory that forces purchasing in bulk to get the best pricing and freight costs to make the needed profit margins.

I'm going to sell off most if not all all of my big plush cranes and maybe keep my ball cranes and candy cranes. I'm essentially getting out of the big and medium plush business, not because it's dead, but because my plush crane incomes have been steadily declining in revenue. Customers have been expressing dissatisfaction to the location owners that these are "rip off" machines, and location owners are constantly asking me for a better commission.

Small cranes, which I find make it easier to get new locations and can be serviced from a car and do not require a truck to move, I am going to keep in partnership with another operator to supply the big plush cranes. The small cranes I'm referring to are Winner Every Time Mini Cranes, which are 18 square inches including the base.

I can also use small cranes for candy and small balls. I see the future for these as the "winner every time" business model.

What I like:

1. In the first month these machines typically earn 10%-15% of what they earn monthly for the entire duration. The most common locations are night clubs and dance clubs where women and men in pursuit of their dating rituals have money to spend. These machines are the only coin operated devices in these locations.
2. I find these a great opportunity since most amusement machine operators don't understand of how to operate, service and promote them within the location. They consist of a computer, a digital camera, a digital commercial grade printer and an interface board, utilizing a Windows based operating system.
3. Photobooths are generally far more expensive to buy than what most operators think they should cost. Again, operators reluctance to buy and operate photo booths gives me a distinct edge.

What I don't like:

1. They require a truck to move.
2. I do not like the bigger, larger photo booths because space in night clubs and dance clubs are at a premium.
3. When I need to reprogram or reformat a hard drive, it's important to have a program disc, preferably as current a disc as possible to avoid waiting for the updates to download off the Internet, which an take 40 minutes. In addition, that service is weakest in the Midwest and on the West Coast, especially on Friday and Saturday.

I absolutely love the photo booth business, despite the dislikes. I currently have around 25 and have more to redeploy since I've lost 12 locations on account of COVID-19. I plan towill sell eight of my big photo booths.

Digital jukeboxes

What I like:

1. Those locations that remained open during COVID-19 performed well.
2. The outlook for these machines is positive as live music venues will have to fight their way back to relevance on account of COVID-19.
3. The move to TV screens in bars has not diminished the popularity of juke boxes. 4. The service/tech support is awesome.

What I don't like:

1. Both AMI and Touchtunes will be increasing their take of locations.
2. The machines are getting older and will need to be replaced by newer models. 3. Service calls require an immediate response. Otherwise, we often risk losing the location.

While digital jukeboxes are a profitable business, I will not be focusing on it as much on account of the need for immediate service, an aspect that I personally dislike.

I will not discuss video games since I have subbed out most of these machines. The only video games that continue to do well are drivers and guns.
