4 Questions to Ask Yourself When Shopping for a Rug

A floor without a rug is like a room without art.

Decorative, tactile, colorful (or not), rugs provide the ultimate finishing touch. Bringing joy to bare feet, our Experts love the way they soften a room both visually and audibly.

&#;

In open-plan rooms, floor coverings are an invaluable tool to define zones: used subtly to define a dining area from a lounge, furniture appears anchored rather than floating around.

&#;

But while there are limitless reasons to add a rug to your floors, it feels like there are just as many options to choose from&#;from thick-pile shags to Persian-style flatweaves. In this guide, we demystify exactly what style works where, in order to set you on your way to finding the rug of your dreams.

&#;

&#;

Sourcing the perfect rug is entirely subjective, but it can be defined by two main factors: where the rug will live, and how durable it needs to be. A hallway welcoming kids, strollers, and dogs will benefit from a hard-wearing wool style, while kitchen runners skew towards patterned, vintage styles for their low pile (and the way the motifs ingeniously hide spillages).

&#;

&#;

Be sure to consider natural light: if you&#;re after color or print, will the sun hit and potentially bleach it? And do you need a style that lends itself to washing? All of these factors are largely determined by what the rug is composed of, which leads us to a round-up on the key materials to know&#;

&#;

The materiality of a rug will not just inform its overall look and feel, but also how it performs.

&#;

Wool, for example, is a natural fiber lauded for high-traffic areas such as living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms, but longer piles like Moroccan and Berber styles can shed.

&#;

This term applies to the density of the fibers in the rug; the pile height indicates the thickness from the surface of the rug to the lowest point of the backing.

&#;

Low-pile rugs (less than 1/4&#;) like flatweaves are better for high-traffic areas and don&#;t impose themselves in terms of profile, so if you have a door which needs to clear a rug, this a smart choice.

&#;

While you can&#;t trial-run a rug like you can paint colors, a smart way to visualize its scale is by using decorator&#;s tape to mark out the dimensions on the floor where it will live.

&#;

For sizing success, it pays to think generously&#;we&#;ve all regretted ordering what turns out to be a comically small rug. For dining tables, pushed-out chairs should still be contained by the rug (think about three feet outside the table&#;s perimeter). In a living room, the ideal scenario is to have all the furniture&#;s legs rest on the rug. If that&#;s not an option, a sofa&#;s front feet should at least rest on the rug and it should extend well past the coffee table, as well as making contact with any additional armchairs.

&#;

&#;

A foolproof placement in bedrooms is to lay the rug perpendicular to the bed, so that there is a small gap between the nightstand and ample coverage around the base to the bottom but if you can go even bigger, having the bed and nightstands resting on the rug with a few feet at the foot of the bed is ideal.

For hallways and runners, as a rule there should always be a run of flooring exposed between your rug and the skirting board. The same goes for any rug&#;about half a foot of flooring should border between the rug and the walls.

The Rug-Buying Guide - by Virginia Chamlee - What's Left

Rugs are an anchor for a room. If the rug is off &#; too big, too small, or an off-putting pattern or material &#; the whole space kind of feels off. On the flip side, rugs can veer a room into a completely new direction. Take that image above &#;the checkered pattern is punchy, but the jute feels homey, lived-in. The rug makes the entire space feel more modern, more considered.

When you buy a new rug, you get to ask yourself: What kind of person am I going to be in this room? What kind of vibe is this room going to give? How will this rug contribute to me living my life the way I intend to?

Does that sound too profound a question to ask when buying a rug? It shouldn&#;t. After all, we spend a lot of our time on rugs, and how our lives are lived really does matter tremendously when it comes to sourcing them. If your rug is in a high-traffic area, it needs to be durable. If it&#;s in a room where the sun hits it just right, you want to ensure it won&#;t lighten up too much. Do you have wheeled furniture on top? The fabric and pile of the rug will need to allow for some glide.

And then there&#;s the sizing&#;exactly how big does a rug need to be?

Rug-buying is intimidating so, in an effort to offer a truly comprehensive look at how to do it right, I turned to an expert: Ben Hyman, co-founder and CEO of Revival Rugs.

He gave me the lowdown on how to buy a rug and, perhaps even better, he gave readers a discount: VCHAMLEE15 for 15% off anything on the Revival site. (And let me just tell you: there&#;s a lot. Both vintage and new styles &#; in fact, the vintage rug in my bedroom is from Revival and I adore it! I went ahead and sourced some of my personal faves from Revival below, if you need some inspiration.)

As for what&#;s selling at the moment, Hyman says Revival&#;s customers &#;love green, they love washable, they love washable wool.&#;

&#;Many of our shoppers love to buy vintage as well as new, mixing rugs of all styles and ages throughout their home,&#; he adds.

Whether you&#;re buying vintage or new, here&#;s what you&#;ll want to consider.

Size

&#;We like to say the two first steps in buying a rug are one: measure your room, and two: buy a rug pad,&#; says Hyman. &#;Other than that, it&#;s fairly subjective. Ideally you want something that isn&#;t too big &#; i.e. there is enough floor visible between the wall and the rug, we like to say at least one to two feet &#; but also something that isn&#;t too small &#; like a postage stamp hidden by your coffee table.&#;

Material

Hyman explains that cotton, wool, jute, and recycled polyester are all durable materials. &#;In a high-traffic area we&#;d recommend something with a lower pile, or a flatweave. Our recycled polyester washable and easy care rugs would be good for this.&#;

If you&#;re shopping for a vintage rug, Hyman suggests a vintage flatweave &#;because it&#;s handwoven, so its construction is sturdy.&#; In any case, though, he says you&#;d definitely want a rug pad to help keep the rug in place and secure.

Vintage

&#;True vintage rugs are all handwoven or hand-knotted and their materials are organic: wool, cotton, silk,&#; Hyman says. &#;Right off the bat, these things speak to longevity.&#;

But what to look for when shopping for a vintage rug? &#;You&#;ll want something that&#;s in good condition based on all your senses: does it look, smell, feel good to the touch? Basically, if it&#;s lasted this long it will continue to last, providing you take care of it. It&#;s also good to buy from a source you trust.&#; Hyman explains that Revival, for instance, ensures all its vintage stock is in excellent condition &#; and they make it a point to do their research when sourcing, so they know where the rug came from and what makes it so special. &#;With textiles, especially old ones, they&#;ve passed through so many hands to get to you that it can be hard to keep track of their provenance&#;it can end up like a game of , which is half the fun!&#;

Cleaning

Cleaning a rug, says Hyman, depends on the fiber and construction. Here&#;s a brief overview:

Jute

&#;Jute rugs don&#;t love excessive moisture&#;it can make them mold&#;so keeping them dry is crucial. Sunbathe them if they get very damp,&#; Hyman says.

Kilim/Flatweave

Kilim and flatware rugs are a little bit different. &#;One thing to know with kilims and flatweaves is that in case of spills, you want to blot the spill until it is dry, but not add liquid. Moisture travels along the fiber, so in rugs with horizontal fibers (like flatweaves), it can get trapped, making it harder to remove stains.&#;

Shag

The best way to clean a shag rug? Shake it off. &#;Dust and dirt that accumulate in your rug can erode the fibers over time. The best way to combat this is to take your rug outside and give it a good shake. Depending on how large it is, you may need to recruit a friend to help,&#; Hyman says.

He continues: &#;If shaking it out isn&#;t possible, you can vacuum it instead &#; just be cautious, and don&#;t use a rotary vacuum, because it can damage the fibers. Once or twice a month, use the suction attachment gently, from side to side. Once or twice a year, flip your rug over and vacuum the back.&#;

Low Pile

Cleaning a low pile rug is fairly straightforward. &#;We recommend that you regularly vacuum your rug to remove dirt and grime,&#; Hyman says. &#;Depending on how heavily your rug is used, just once or twice a month is adequate. Too much vacuuming can wear down the knots and fibers more quickly. If you have a suction attachment on your vacuum cleaner, use that instead of a rotary vacuum.&#;

  • I&#;m doing a cleanse &#; and I&#;m going to chart the entire thing, day by day, on Instagram Stories, starting Jan. 6. And of course I&#;ll share the after &#; how I felt, if I noticed any changes &#; in a newsletter after. I&#;m doing a very simple, 5-day reset, and if you want to do it with me, now&#;s the time &#; the company my program came from just announced all their programs are $100 off for the month of January. You get five days worth of food (matcha, breakfast porridge pouches, almond butter, bone broth mix, etc.), plus 30-day app access to workouts and meditations by Melissa Wood Tepperberg. I will be adding to mine &#; veggies and a little fish to the bone broth, for instance, and fruit to the protein powder for smoothies (which is recommended!) but I will be sticking to the program completely: no alcohol, no coffee, no sugar, etc. Coffee is going to be the most difficult for me to say goodbye to. I have two shots of espresso every morning. Fortunately the matcha has caffeine so I should be okay. In an effort to remain accountable, I will share each and every meal, along with my thoughts, on Instagram day by day &#; and in a longer video shared here, after the five days are through.

  • If you need to catch up on the Justin Baldoni x Blake Lively situation, the Ringer&#;s podcast is the best place to do it. Obviously, read the New York Times piece, too, as that is who broke the story. This story demonstrates how you can not trust everything you see on social media. So many people think that social media is to be trusted over the mainstream media but baby, social media is incredibly easily manipulated &#; by professionals! &#; all the time.

  • My favorite bra, which I have written about many times on the newsletter, is reduced on final sale. I wear this bra all the time (I have the matching undies, too). The cups are molded but it&#;s wireless and more comfortable than a sports bra. Great under a t-shirt, great on a travel day. Simply, the best.
