Electric Off Road Golf Carts: A Greener Alternative
Electric carts have emerged as a greener transport alternative as we focus on more sustainable practices.
These machines are not just about reducing carbon footprints; they also pack a range of benefits that make them an ideal choice for off-roading.
Benefits Of Electric Off Road Carts
Eco-friendly: Electric carts run on rechargeable batteries, eliminating fossil fuel needs. This results in zero emissions, making them a far more environmentally friendly option than traditional gas-powered vehicles.
Quiet Operation: One of the most appreciated features of electric vehicles is their silent operation. This allows you to enjoy the serenity of nature without any noise pollution.
Cost-Effective: While the upfront price of electric carts might be higher, they are more cost-effective in the long run. The electricity needed to charge these carts is significantly lower than the gas price.
Limitations Of Electric Carts
While electric carts offer numerous advantages, they, of course, do come with their set of limitations:
Limited Range: Electric golf carts typically offer a range of 20 to 30 miles on a single charge. Although this is sufficient for most use cases, it might pose a challenge for extended off-road adventures.
Battery Replacement: Over time, the performance of the batteries used in electric golf carts will degrade and need to be replaced, which can be a sizable investment.
Gas-Powered Golf Carts: Power Meets Portability
Gas-powered carts have long held their own. They blend strength with portability, offering a dynamic choice for those seeking an off-road companion.
But like any vehicle, they come with advantages and drawbacks.
Lets explore these, considering the unique demands of off-road adventures.
Advantages Of Gas-Powered Golf Carts
Extended Range: Gas golf carts excel in range. Unlike most electric golf cart models that require frequent recharging, these carts can cover longer distances with just a simple refuel, making them ideal for prolonged off-road escapades.
High Output: These carts pack a punch regarding power. The robust engines can easily handle steep hills and challenging terrains, ensuring a smooth and reliable ride.
Easy Refueling: Theres no need to wait hours for a recharge with a gas-powered cart. You can simply refuel and get back on the road, a particularly beneficial convenience in remote camping areas where charging stations may be scarce.
Drawbacks Of Gas-Powered Golf Carts
Environmental Impact: Gas-powered golf carts emit carbon dioxide and other pollutants like gasoline vehicles. This environmental impact can be a significant drawback for eco-conscious users.
Noise and Vibration: These carts tend to be noisier and vibrate more than their electric counterparts, which might detract from the serene experience of exploring the outdoors.
Maintenance Requirements: Regular maintenance, including oil changes and spark plug replacements, must keep a gas golf cart running smoothly. This could add to the overall cost and time investment.
Off-Roading Key Features To Consider
When choosing a golf cart for off-roading, like the E-Z-GO Valor 6, certain features can enhance your experience.
Wheels and Suspension: Consider carts with larger diameter wheels for better traction and adjustable suspension and shocks to provide a smoother ride over bumpy terrain.
Tires: Look for tires designed for off-roading, as they will provide superior grip on dirt or loose gravel. All-terrain tire designs can also be beneficial in wet conditions.
Lift Kits: A lift kit can help you navigate more rugged terrain and provide better clearance for obstacles like rocks, logs, and stumps.
Lighting: For those who enjoy riding at night or in low-light conditions, lighting options such as headlights and taillights can make the experience safer and more enjoyable.
Accessories: There are a variety of accessories available for golf carts that can enhance your experience, such as horn kits, gun racks, cooler holders, and storage compartments. Additional options like cup holders and sun shades can also be beneficial.
Customization: You can customize your cart by adding decals and graphics to give it a unique look. You can also install custom seats and steering wheels to give your cart a more personalized touch.
Safety Gear: It is important to wear the appropriate safety gear when riding in a golf cart, such as a helmet, goggles, gloves, and closed-toe shoes. Additionally, having a first aid kit on board is smart for any minor scrapes and bruises.
Off Road Golf Cart For Hunting
Off-road golf carts designed for hunting offer a quiet and efficient way to navigate through rough terrain. With an electric off-road golf cart, hunters can easily move through the woods without disturbing wildlife, thanks to its silent operation. These carts are equipped with rugged tires and enhanced suspension, making them perfect for handling uneven and challenging paths. The compact size of off-road golf carts allows hunters to access narrow trails and remote areas where larger vehicles cant go.
Additionally, these carts often come with storage options for gear and game, making them a practical choice for hunters looking for a reliable and eco-friendly way to travel in the wilderness.

Safety Tips For Driving An Off-Road Golf Cart
Engaging in off-road adventures with a golf cart can be a thrilling experience, but safety should always be the top priority.
Here are some guidelines on how to safely operate off-road golf carts.
Stick to the Designated Seating Capacity
Every golf cart has a designated seating capacity. Overloading an off-road golf cart with more passengers than it is designed to carry can lead to instability and potential accidents. Always adhere to the vehicles seating capacity to ensure a safe ride.
Use Seatbelts and Keep Limbs Inside
If your golf cart is equipped with seatbelts, use them. They provide an extra layer of safety, especially when navigating rough terrain. All passengers should keep their hands, arms, legs, and feet inside the golf cart.
Avoid Sharp Turns and Drive Straight on Slopes
Sharp turns can increase the risk of rollovers, especially on slopes. Its safer to drive straight up and down slopes. Slow down when approaching turns and always maintain a controlled speed.
Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions
Distractions can lead to accidents. Avoid using mobile phones, eating, or engaging in activities that might divert your attention from driving. Concentrate on the path ahead and be aware of your surroundings.
Use Hand Signals for Turning and Stopping
Hand signals can communicate your intentions to other drivers, especially when turning or stopping. This is particularly important if your golf cart lacks turn signals or brake lights.
Never Drive Under the Influence
Operating a golf cart under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only illegal, but its also extremely dangerous. Always ensure that the driver is sober and alert.
Operate from the Drivers Side Only
Always operate the golf cart from the drivers side. This ensures better control and visibility. Avoid driving with your foot hanging outside of the vehicle.
Equip Your Cart with Safety Features
Consider equipping your golf cart with safety features like a brush guard to protect the front of the cart from damage, especially when driving through dense vegetation, woods, or rocky terrains. A lift kit can increase ground clearance, making it easier to navigate rough terrain.

Off Road Golf Cart Capabilities
A quick google search for off-road golf carts will overwhelm you with options and ideas, and youll quickly fall down a rabbit hole of incredibly creative people who have done amazing things with such a simple base vehicle.
So, where do you start?
First, well explore some popular uses of golf carts modified for off-road applications. Once you determine what activities/environments youll use your cart for the most, well help you narrow down the perfect accessories to achieve the right balance of functionality and aesthetics.
Keep in mind this is nowhere near an extensive list of what you can do with a golf cart. Instead, consider this your inspiration guide, and let your imagination run wild. Weve seen some incredibly creative ideas on the internet stick around until the end, and well share some of our favorite unique off-road carts at the end of this article.
Hunting & Fishing
The top emerging use for off-road golf carts is for hunting and fishing purposes. Golf carts can fit in spaces too tight for a UTV/ATV and have more storage and seating capacity. The most significant factor leading avid hunters towards golf carts, as opposed to other vehicles, is their stealthy approach. An electric golf cart is essentially silent, ensuring you wont disrupt any unsuspecting wildlife, and you wont be exhausted by first light from the long walk back to your deer stand. Don't forget to pick up a

Farming / Homesteading
Theres no question that farmers are some of the hardest working people on this planet. Theres also no doubt they can use all the help they can get. In addition to the farmers that raise the food we get every day at the grocery store, recent years have shown a resurgence of folks who wish to become more self-sustaining by taking responsibility for growing their own food, raising livestock, maintaining their own farm equipment, all while juggling the day-to-day responsibilities of family and home ownership. Golf carts modified for off-road applications can carry tools, people, and smaller animals all over your homestead and haul trailers for harvest time!

Trail Riding / Camping
Similar to hunting, with the addition of just a few accessories, you can take your golf cart to places you never thought it would be capable. Climbing steep hills, crossing through mud and small streams, and more are entirely achievable tasks for a golf cart tricked out with the right aftermarket accessories.
Camping is an excellent environment for an off-road golf cart as its essentially all unpaved ground and, depending on the style of camping you prefer, usually on large plots of land, and possibly a long distance from the bath houses or recreational areas. If youve ever had a toddler (or yourself) with a bathroom emergency, you already know where were coming from. A golf cart will get you wherever you need to go in a jiffy!
Selecting a Golf Cart
Now that you have a sense of some of the more common off-road capabilities of a golf cart, its time to start planning your build.
The first step in your journey to the ultimate off-road golf cart buggy must begin with the great debate
Gas or Electric. Weve found that the standard assumption is that gas golf carts are more heavy-duty and robust. Heres the fact- besides their drivetrain (gas or electric), both carts are identical. As with anything, there are pros and cons, and well cover the main points here. But ultimately, the intended use for your cart will determine which power option will work best for your needs.
Gas Golf Carts
The most significant factor leading people to gas-powered golf carts is that there is essentially no downtime when it runs out of fuel. For example, if you use your golf cart for farm/homestead chores, having your batteries run out of charge in the middle of the workday would be most inconvenient. Where a gas-powered cart can be refueled in moments and be ready to get back to work, a complete set of batteries can take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours to recharge. Gas-powered golf carts also have a fuel gauge to keep the driver aware of the remaining power level; gauges for battery level are far less standard and typically will not come supplied with the batteries. Gas-powered golf carts have a standard combustion engine and run on regular fuel, just like your daily driver vehicle, and produce emissions and fumes similarly. These carts will also require regular maintenance, such as oil changes, spark plugs, and belts. Just like other gas-powered vehicles, gas golf carts are relatively noisy. While this may not be an issue if youre doing tasks around your property or cruising around town, if youre trying to sneak deep into the woods to find that monster buck youve been watching on the trail camera all summer, you surely dont want to announce your approach and scare him off.
Electric Golf Carts
If your goal is to be equally stealthy and eco-friendly, an electric golf cart may be just the choice for you! These models travel silently, with no emissions, and modern 48v electric carts can boast the same hauling power and travel speed as their gas-powered alternatives. Electric carts have fewer components to maintain or cause issues, which typically results in a longer lifespan for the vehicle. If you care for your golf cart properly, lead-acid batteries could last you 6-10 years, and lithium batteries can last 20-30 years read that again two to three
decades! For a more in-depth, technical overview of the ins and outs of batteries, check out our previous blog post,

The fun part Lets Build!
Now well get to the exciting part: actually adding the accessories to your stock model golf cart. As we mentioned, its easy to go overboard and get lost in the world of aftermarket accessories, but weve narrowed down the must-haves to get your golf cart off-road ready!
Lift Kits
A suspension lift kit is the first, and most important accessory youll want to add to ensure your golf cart can perform adequately off-road. Lift kits do just that, lift the vehicle 3-6 inches higher off the ground to assist in navigating over rough terrain, brush, and debris. A lift kit will be required for the following absolute must-have off-road wheels and tires.
Off-Road Wheels & Tires
Standard golf cart tires are intended to navigate and protect delicate golf course landscaping, meaning these tires have minimal tread and very little ability to traverse challenging environments. In addition to the minimal tread, these tires are very small in diameter- 18 as opposed to something like the Golf Cart Stuff GTW Nomad, sitting high at 23, and full of rugged tread prepared for the most demanding conditions, theres not much these tires wont cruise through.
Leaf springs
Your stock leaf springs may not only be old and worn out, but they are not equipped to handle the addition of the new lift kit and larger wheels and tires youve just decided to add to your cart. While youve got the cart unassembled to install the above, you should absolutely add leaf springs to your list of must-upgrade accessories.
Brush Guard
Golf Cart Stuff stocks a superior line of Steeleng® Brush Guards to add an extra layer of protection to your golf cart, shielding it from small branches, twigs, tall grass, and other debris. In addition, they make your golf cart look more demanding and rugged.
A golf cart is a significant investment, and its essential to protect that investment. By installing a brush guard, you can continue to enjoy all the benefits of your golf cart while keeping it clean and damage-free for years to come.
Fender Flares
In our opinion, these should really be called Fender
Flairs because they add such a unique look and style to your golf cart. They also provide an added layer of protection from dirt, rocks, or debris kicked up from the driving surface. The best part? Fender Flares are easy to install!
Bonus Parts!
As we said from the beginning, it can be easy to get carried away when adding accessories to your golf cart. Now that we've covered the must-haves for your upgraded cart, let's look at a few must-consider items (all available in our shop)!
Lights
Mirrors
Cargo/Utility Box
Seat Belts
Hip Restraints
Windshield
Difficulty and Cost
Depending on your mechanical expertise and available tools, most golf cart modifications can be done without the hiring of a professional mechanic. The most difficult upgrades to carry out on your own will be the suspension lift kit and the rear leaf springs, but even those can be done yourself if you have the proper equipment.
Weve crunched the numbers to get you the best estimate possible for turning your standard golf cart into an off-road machine. If youre willing to put in a little sweat equity and not rely on a mechanic, you can get into all the above-suggested accessories for around $1,000 - $1,600. If you plan to hire some of the labor out, you should expect to pay from $75-$150+ per hour to a dealer or other shop.
Now get out and explore!
That's all we've got for you today. Thank you for sticking around until the end. We hope that weve provided you with some helpful insight into how much more use you can get out of your golf cart by converting it to be off-road capable with just a few simple accessories.
We would love to see what off-road modifications youve made to your golf cart!
