Questions to ask a car wrapping company
A reliable wrap team will provide honest answers, and they might have the info you need right on their website. If not, its a great way to screen the wrong companies out, so you can look elsewhere for better results.
1. Is a vehicle wrap right for my project?
A trusted vehicle wrapping company wont just take your money theyll give it to you straight! They should also be happy to discuss your project in detail, so youll know for sure that a wrap is right for you. If youre restoring a classic or vintage car, for example, they may recommend a respray instead. Our guide on wraps vs resprays explains this in more detail.
If theres rust or damage, theyll likely explain how it can affect the lifespan of the wrap. Unless you only need a short-term wrap, like for a brand activation, you can expect them to suggest you repair the damage before it gets worse.
2. How much experience do you have?
What youre really asking is, How good are you?
Break this down by asking who theyve worked with, what training their team goes through, and how they check for quality.
Track Record - An established vehicle wrapping company will have hundreds of projects under their belt, so they should be happy to showcase previous jobs that were similar to yours.
Training Vehicle wrapping demands a high skill level. These skills dont just happen overnight, so go ahead and ask about training methods. Be aware that some companies outsource the installation work, and thats something youll want to know from the outset!
Operational vs Team Experience Operational experience is the number of years the companys been wrapping vehicles. Team experience is how long each installers been in the industry, added up. So, a vehicle wrap company boasting 20 years of experience might not have been founded 20 years ago it could mean they have 5 installers, each with 4 years of experience.
Many years of team and operational experience means your project is in capable hands.
3. Can you help with the design elements?
For vehicle branding, bespoke wraps and liveries, design is an important part of the process. A vehicle template lets you place your design elements on a 2D representation of your car or van, but its not for amateur use. It takes a skilled graphic designer with experience in templates and Adobe Illustrator to ensure the design will look just right on your vehicle.
Before you settle on a car wrapping company, see if they can do this for you. If so, you wont have to look for a separate designer, and everything will be kept in-house. While youre at it, ask if they present 3D renders so you can see how your car or van will look when wrapped.
4. How will you protect my vehicle against loss or damage?
Always find out how your vehicle will be protected. After all, its your money and your potential risk! Smaller car wrapping companies are less likely to have security and insurance policies than more established ones.
If you need them to pick up or drop off your vehicle, check they have a motor trade licence and insurance. They might even deliver your vehicle using a transporter truck if youre concerned about mileage.
Do you know where your car or van will be stored before the wrap? How do they stop thieves from getting on-site? Get answers to these questions for peace of mind and ask for a copy of their insurance policy. Most policies cover cars and vans up to a certain value, so its worth asking if it applies to your vehicle too.
5. How will you manage my project?
A good car wrap company will have quality checks in place for the design, approval and proofing stages. In fact, your vehicle should be checked and rechecked for the best results possible. This is important for fleet branding, as each van must be consistent with logos, text and other graphics. The team should be able to run through their quality control methods, and if not, try elsewhere.
This applies to the day of the wrap too. Theyll need to clean the vehicle before the installation, so its worth asking how far theyre willing to go with it. Most companies wont be happy to clean weeks of dirt and mud, so prepare your car or van for wrapping to prevent delays.
Tip: If a car wrap company holds ISO certification, it means theyre audited every year. Thats a good sign they take quality control seriously.
6. What vinyl wrap brands do you use?
The material used matters. Look for established brands such as Oracal, 3M, Metamark, Arlon and Avery Dennison. These manufacturers create high-quality vinyls that are built last and come with their own product warranties. They stretch well, conform to the bodywork and remain secure for up to 5 years.
Any good car wrapping company will be proud to be affiliated with these suppliers. 3M Gold Partnership, for example, recognises companies through its authorised vehicle wrapping accreditation program.
If a vehicle wrap company uses cheaper vinyl, watch out! The results may look fine at first but rapidly start to degrade. Low-quality wraps typically peel, blister and fade, so you shouldnt compromise on quality for the cheapest option. You might end up paying more overall!
If a car wrap company doesnt use an established brand, we recommend you drop them.
7. Can an unpainted or primed vehicle be wrapped?
No. Vehicle wrap films like sticking to high-gloss surfaces, not porous or matte finishes, similar to primer and unpainted metal. They also dont apply well to the moulded plastic bumpers and trims found on most vehicles. Vinyl cant adhere properly to these surface textures, leading to peeling, bubbling and wrap failure.
If you want a vehicle wrapped, its important to treat any rust or flaking paint first, and if you have lots of matte, grey primer, paint these areas to create a smooth, gloss finish. Any reputable car wrapping company will give you the same advice.
8. How can I maximise the life of my vehicle wrap?
An experienced vinyl wrap company will keep your projects details on file in case of damage or wrap failure. That way, they can easily reapply your wrap without issues.
Beyond repairs, they might offer the following tips:
Fuel Dont get petrol or diesel on your wrap. This is important when filling up, as fuel can dribble from the hose when its taken off the rack. If petrol lands on your wrap, its corrosive properties may cause discolouration.
Waxing You dont need to wax the wrap once its installed, and some wax formulas can be abrasive. Only use a specialised product from the likes of Swissvax or Avery Dennison, thats been designed for use on vinyl.
Automatic car washes You wouldnt want your wrap to get scratched, so any good vehicle wrap company will recommend you clean your vehicle by hand.
Jet washing A high pressure level could cause the vinyl to peel away. Keep the pressure below 2,000 psi and the temperature below 80 C. Avoid holding the nozzle too close to the wrap.
Shampoo When washing a wrapped car or van, use a bucket of water with a low or neutral pH level. You can also try a waterless car wash product to lift the stains away.
Check out our guide on vehicle wrap aftercare for more on keeping your wrap looking great for longer.
9. Can you remove a vehicle wrap?
Any car wrapping company worth its salt will be able to remove your wrap with a little heat, time and care. However, if they havent used an established vinyl brand or lack the experience and patience needed, the underlying paint job may be damaged.
Thats why its so important to choose a team that uses high-quality films like 3M and Avery Dennison. These are designed for easy removal, and they wont leave any adhesive or damage the paintwork.
10. What's your warranty policy?
When it comes to warranties, youll want to ask about the service and materials used. Established brands come with their own product warranties, and you can find out more in the ultimate guide to vehicle wrap warranties.
Its not just about the product though you also want the installers on your side. The right vehicle wrapping company will be happy to look after you in case of any mishaps.
Some companies repair or replace damaged wraps at no extra cost within a certain timeframe. Get the details of these guarantees beforehand, so you know what theyll do free of charge, and under what conditions.
Bonus: How much will my wrap cost?
Once youre satisfied with the answers you get, its time to take the next step and find out how much your wrap will cost. Unfortunately, not everyones clear with their pricing and most expect you to hand over personal details before theyll provide an estimate.

Advertising Opportunities
Car wrapping provides an amazing opportunity for any kind of business that really wants to put their product in the public eye.
From pizza delivery cars to landscaping trucks, having a vehicle wrapped in the company logo, colors, or slogan is a sure fire way to get it into the sight of and on the minds of passersby.

Cost
For many, the most crucial piece of information! Cost-wise, vinyl wrapping is within the same price range as a fresh paint job, depending on the desired modifications and whether or not its a detailed job or standard wrap.
So it all depends on what the customer is looking to get done. A full vinyl wrap installed by an experienced technician is usually around $, about as much as a high quality paint job.
If youre looking to get a deal on your vinyl wrap or paint job, there are of course cheaper options for both methods. But remember; whatever is paid for is what you have to live with!
This is where experience and know-how makes the difference between something youre proud of or a potentially expensive fix.
Maintenance
Just like a paint job, vinyl car wraps need proper maintenance if theyre going to remain at the same dazzling quality. Its recommended that car wraps be hand washed only, at least once a week, with a cleaning agent specifically tailored to the vinyl wrap.
Important! Trying to get your wrapped car through an automatic wash could result in damaging the wrap job irrevocably.
Having a truck or vehicle wrap is an investment in your businesses marketing, so to make sure you get the real worth out of it, make sure you follow the after-care guidance. Its worth it!
Post-wrap care is really important to maintain a fresh look and extend the life for years and years.
Durability
A vehicle wrap can last a very long time if its properly taken care of.
If done right and diligently maintained, a car wrap job can last for about 7 years. Typically, customers start to notice a difference in quality near the 4 to 5-year mark; the color, shine and feel starts to show its age.
However, these are minor and natural, as opposed to the marks of shoddy workmanship, like bubbles, creases, and premature lifting of the wrap because of dirt.
If you want to make sure your wrap is durable, heres what to do:

Vinyl Wrap Design Options
Now, this is the fun part! Car wrapping has so many options itll make anyones head spin off their shoulders.
Colors, patterns, aesthetics, even placement: its all customizable.
There are also types of vinyl that mimic other materials like stainless steel, carbon fiber, and leather, not to mention the vast array of finishes like satin, gloss, semi-gloss or matte.
With all of these options to choose from, its easy to imagine how your company or logo designs can really come to life on a vinyl wrap.
When it comes to car wrapping, the creative possibilities are virtually endless.
At Outpacer, were experts in all things vinyl. If you have an idea, we can make it a reality. If you need help, we have expert designers who can help you to understand whats possible with a custom vehicle wrap.
Application
Some people think that getting their car wrapped will cover dents, rust or paint splatters, making the car look shiny and new.
They couldnt be more wrong.
In order to apply vinyl wrapping to a car, the surface has to be as smooth and as clean as possible! Otherwise, the vinyl wont adhere correctly; there will be bubbles and creases, and every imperfection will show beneath it.
Its recommended that the car owner gets their vehicle thoroughly washed and detailed before getting it wrapped. Its a process, true, but its the only surefire way to prevent premature lifting of the wrap and ensure you get your moneys worth.
Removal
If you decide to sell your car, or just want to try a different look, car wrapping can be removed.
Removing vinyl wrap can go one or two ways depending on the previous maintenance.
First of all, its always best to take the car back to the original shop that applied the wrap. If the wrap is still intact structurally, removal is easy-peasy, only taking about 3 to 4 hours and costing around $600. If removal gets nasty, with the wrap coming apart because of being baked in, the labor time and price will definitely climb.
Either way you slice it, removing your wrap or updating your companies graphics is alway an option. Nice!

Paint Protection
If a car has high quality or factory paint job, car wrapping will do two things really well for it: cover it and protect it.
Theres no need to fear you might damage the paint. In fact, the vinyl will act as a barrier between the paint and weather exposure, rocks and other debris, and the normal wear of time. If done the right way, the vinyl wont even leave a sticky residue when removed.
Of course, you should be picky about what sort of vinyl is used to guarantee the best results. 3M and Avery & Arlon are the best in the business if youre using them your wrap will see best results.
Warranties
Uh oh, a scratch, ding, or tear is made in the brand new car wrap. What can be done?
As with most services done to a vehicle, vinyl wrapping comes with a warranty. Depending on who did the wrapping, there could be a few or many options.
Every detail comes with its own warranty length, but the average seems to be between 1 and 5 years, given that a full car wrap life is estimated at 3 to 5 years (7 if youre a little diligent about maintenance).
Generally speaking, whats covered and what isnt is subject to who does the wrapping.

Its Not For Everyone
Just like anything else one does to modify a vehicle, car wrapping is an investment; and not just an investment of money, but of time.
An important factor that is often overlooked is where a person lives and the weather conditions theyll be driving or working in.
For example salt used for the road in cold, snowy climates takes its toll on the vinyl. Likewise, if left out too long in the extreme heat, the wrapping will definitely begin to wear out.
No matter where you live, its important to know that after-care is crucial to the life of a vinyl wrap.
If the maintenance and extra care is a deal-breaker, then maybe a vinyl wrap isnt for you. But, if you spend the extra effort we can almost guarantee the wrap will make it worth your while.
